Abstract:

The aim of this work is the investigation of the structure and flow kinetics of polymers confined in ion track-etched nanopores. Small angle X-ray scattering and atomic force microscopy show that well-defined cylindrical nanopores with radii in the range of a few 10 nm to a few 100 nm can be produced by ion track-etching. In particular, it is demonstrated that atomic layer deposition of SiO2 results in an extremely homogeneous coating of the nanopores, which does not affect the pore shape.

For the investigation of flow kinetics the homopolymer polydimethylsiloxane, which is an amorphous melt at room temperature, is used as a model system. Time-resolved small angle X-ray scattering and specially developed model functions show that the flow kinetics within the nanopores qualitatively agree with classical capillary flow, but quantitatively a slowdown in the filling speed is observed. This can be explained by an adsorbed surface layer which reduces the effective pore radius.

The structure of polymers within the nanopores is examined using the model system of a semicrystalline polyethylene glycol homopolymer. Small and wide angle X-ray scattering, atomic force microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry show that concentric lamellae form within large nanopores. In regards to the small angle X-ray scattering a model is developed to describe the combined scattering of the nanopores and the enclosed polymer. With a decrease of the pore radius a transition of the lamellar configuration to unbent lamellae is found. This is reflected in the melting behavior of the crystallites. Regarding the orientation of the crystallites it is found that for both lamellar configurations the chain axis of the PEG is oriented perpendicular to the pore axis and thus the crystallites grow along the pores.
