Abstract:

It is widely accepted that the root system of shrubs and trees have a great importance in slope stabilization and erosion control, but up to now there exists no standardised calculation methods including the soil-root parameters. The experimental studies focused on the quantitative determination of the root tensile strength and the increase in soil shear strength due to root systems in the laboratory and in-situ, e. g. in the new planting field at Darmstadt University of Technolo-gy. In order to quantify the contribution of roots to soil mechanical properties, direct shear tests, using the large new designed shear box apparatus, on samples of root-less soil and soil with roots, respectively, were carried out. In long term studies over 14 years the changes of soil suction and saturation in a natural overgrown embankment subject to climatic seasonal variations were meas-ured. Based on these results the developed modelling is implemented in the conventional stability analysis of shallow rooted slopes by using the new factor of root cohesion specific to depth.
