Abstract:

Alternative AbstractLanguage

It has been known for several decades that carbon itself has good catalytic properties so there is no need to use metals and their oxides in catalysis. Carbon catalysis was intensively investigated in the conversion of ethylbenzene to styrene, mostly with activated carbon and carbon nanotubes as catalysts. This thesis investigates whether the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of ethanol to acetaldehyde is also possible with carbon catalysis. This would provide an interesting alternative to the Wacker-Höchst process which is used for large-scale production of acetaldehyde and based on ethylene. In this work polymer-derived carbons were used as catalysts, which were produced by a new developed synthetic route. It could be shown that the polymer-derived carbons are suitable as catalysts for the ODH of ethanol. Their performance depends on the synthesis conditions. At high pyrolysis temperatures, catalytic properties comparable to those of nanotubes. Mechanistically, it could be shown that the main by-product of the reaction is ethyl acetate and is formed by the esterification of acetaldehyde and ethanol that have been overoxidized to acetic acid.
