Abstract:

Using the K+ production in relativistic heavy ion collisions the properties of compressed nuclear matter are studied. For this purpose Au+Au collisions have been measured at beam energies from 0.6 to 1.5 AGeV and C+C collisions from 0.8 to 2.0 AGeV, respectively. The experiments were performed with the Kaon Spectrometer (KaoS) at the heavy ion synchrotron (SIS) of GSI Darmstadt. In comparison to C+C reactions one finds a smaller pion multiplicity per participating nucleon M/A in Au+Au collisions while the K+ multiplicity is enhanced. The ratio of the K+ meson excitation functions for Au+Au and C+C collisions increases aproximate by a factor of 3 with decreasing beam energy. Transport model calculations show that this ratio is a sensitive observable to the incompressibility of nuclear matter. The results favor a value of about 200 MeV (a "soft" nuclear equation-of-state).
