Abstract:

In this Ph.D. thesis, the formation of compounds in the quaternary systems Li–EA–M–N (EA=Ca, Sr, Ba ; M = Mn, Re, Cr) was investegated. The crystal structures of the obtained compounds were determined by single crystal X-ray investigations. The transition metals are coordinated by nitrogen under formation of complex nitridometallate anions. The nitridorhenates(VII) LiEA2[ReVIIN4] (EA = Sr, Ba) contain isolated [ReN4]5--tetrahedra. The compounds Li6EA2[MnIV2N6] (EA = Ca, Sr) and Li6Sr2[CrV2N6] include complex anions [M2N6]n- with homonuclear M–M-contacts. In case of Li6EA2[MnIV2N6] there is an unbridged Mn–Mn-bond, in Li4Sr2[CrV2N6] both Cr-atoms are bridged by two nitrido ligands. The interaction of the transition metals in these nitridometalates was investigated by quantum chemical calculations (band structure and Electron-Localization-Function) and magnetic suszeptiblity measurements. According to this, there is a Mn–Mn-single bond in the complex anion [MnIV2N6]10-. Both electrons which remain at the Mn-centres (MnIV = d3) are oriented parallel to each other but show an antiferromagnetic coupling with the electrons of the neighbouring Mn-centre in the dimer. Within this Ph.D. thesis it was further shown that the compound LiMgN (published in 1948 by Juza and co-workers) is a high-temperature modification (a-LiMgN). The crystal structure of the modification which is stable at room temperature (b-LiMgN) was determined by single crystal X-ray investigations. The reversible phase transition b- to a-LiMgN was investigated with thermal analysis (DTA/TG, DSC) and X-ray powder patterns at increased temperatures. In both modifications of LiMgN the Li- and Mg-ions occupy the tetrahedral voids of the fcc-latice built by nitrogen. The phase transition b- to a-LiMgN involves the change from an ordered arrangement of Li- and Mg-ions to an unordered one.
