Abstract:

Alternative AbstractLanguage

Copolymers of ethylene and polar comonomers like vinyl acetate, and methyl or butyl acrylate can be separated according to their chemical composition using gradient HPLC with gradients of cyclohexanone-TCB or decalin-TCB. The separation according to chemical composition can be confirmed using FTIR-spectroscopy for detection. The chromatographic method can be tailored for particular comonomers. Thus sets of samples from different producers, having either a broad or a narrow chemical composition distribution (CCD) can be distinguished. Also copolymer fractions with a low content of the comonomer and polyethylene were found in selected samples. The chromatographic results with regard to the CCD are in good agreement with those from Crystallisation Analysis Fractionation (CRYSTAF).
