Abstract:

Facing climate change, a steadily growing demand for individual mobility and the widespread use of diesel vehicles, the reduction of pollutant emissions, fuel consumption and CO2 of the diesel engine is very important. The potential of reducing the exhaust-gas emission before the catalytic converter is assumed to be especially high.In order to make use of this potential there is a need for methods that consider and use the cause-effect correlations of injection system and engine. The high variant diversity and complexity suggest the use of computer based simulation methods. In this thesis the cause-effect correlations along all involved processes will be analysed with the support of a continuos simulation method. The simulation is being validated in two steps. The mixture formation, ignition and combustion are analysed by a comparison of high pressure combustion chamber experiments and simulations. The simulation of fuel consumption and pollutant emissions is subsequently assessed by comparison to engine test bench results. The high pressure combustion chamber experiment is executed following the Engine Combustion Network (ECN) Spray B [1]. Two high speed cameras simultaneously record Mie scattering, Schlieren and line of sight light emission images. From this images the liquid penetration, vapor penetration, ignition delay and flame lift-off length are determined. The simulation is based on an existing tool chain [2, 3, 4] which maps the cause-effect chain from the injector to the combustion chamber. The 3D-CFD spray and combustion simulation is done by using the AVL FIRE software. Due to the relatively small computing time the chemical reactions are modelled by tabulated chemistry using TABKIN FGM as an approach. The comparison of high pressure combustion chamber experiments and simulation shows the range of initial chamber conditions for which the simulations fit the experiments. Additionally the impact of spray initialisation, the validity of a n-Dodecane and p-Xylene mixture as diesel surrogate and the spray and combustion behaviour for multiple injections is assessed. The observations made for the combustion chamber are used to estimate the quality of spray formation and ignition in different operating points and injection patterns in the engine. For the evaluation of engine simulations, pressure curves and integral values of soot and nitrogen oxides are assessed in comparison to the experiment. [1] Y. Jung u. a.
