Abstract:

A new apparatus for the measurement of dissociation cross sections and bond dissociation energies was constructed in this work. The setup consists of a modified Electrospray-Quadrupole mass spectrometer as an ion selection stage, an home built Ring Ion Guide and Ion Funnel for ion transport, a modified collision cell and an orthogonal Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer, built in-house, as a detection unit. With this setup, it is possible to achieve stable ion intensities over the period of experimental time, typically a workday. The mother ions are fragmented energy-dependent when a collision gas is added to the collision cell and the dissociation cross section is received through the measurement of the fragment ion intensity to the mother ion intensity ratio. The dissociation of FeOH+(H2O)3 was studied exemplarily. The modelling of the experimental cross section for the loss of one water molecule results in an experimental threshold energy of 0,83 ± 0,10 eV. This value corresponds to the bond dissociation energy at a temperature of 0 Kelvin and agrees with literature data of 0,94 ± 0,05 eV, measured at the GIBMS, Utah, within experimental uncertainties. The resulting bond dissociation energy of 79,7 ± 9,3 kJ/mol is also in good agreement with results from quantum chemical calculations of 81,0 - 97,5 kJ/mol.
