Abstract:

Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) experienced an increasing interest in scientific research as well as in commercial applications. An existing problem of these OLEDs is the limited efficiency when materials are used, on which the light emission is based von fluorescence. By the use of phosphorescent materials, the efficiency can be raised considerably. A main goal of the following thesis was the synthesis of semiconducting polymers, which are containing phosphorescent complexes for the application in organic light emitting diodes. These materials should be based on iridium complexes and polyfluorenes. As a first step, iridium complexes with differently substituted phenylpyridine ligands, which could act as comonomeric units, were syntesized. In a following step dibromofluorenes were copolymerized with various amounts of the iridum complexes described above via the yamamoto protocol. Furthermore the synthesis of triplett-emitting polymers via the suzuki protocol was tried. However, unlike the yamamoto reaction only oligomeric products could be obtained. A further intention of this paper was the characterization of the spectroscopic properties of both the iridium complexes and the complex containing polyfluorenes. Therefor UV/Vis- and photoluminescence spectra were measured. In the case of the monomer complexes this has shown, that the emission spectra will be dominated by the ligand which exhibits the energetically lowest triplett state. In the case of the complex containing polyfluorenes it can be seen that the emission spectra are nearly identical in spite of various amounts or different structures of the copolymerized iridium complex. Finally the lifetimes of the excited states in the monomer complexes and the complex polymers were determined by laser-pulse spectroscopic methods. In the last part the synthesis of discrete lumophor systems are described. The motivation was to figure out the reason of the differences between the monomer complexes and the complex polymers. Mono- and difluorene units were coupled onto the iridium complexes and the spectroscopic properties were measured. This showed the tendency, as longer the coupled fluorene units are as more the emission and absorption spectra are comparable to the spectra obtained by the complex polymers. Due to these results the conclusion can be drawn, that the effective lumophoric group inside the complex polymer contains six fluorene units with an iridium complex in the middle.
